More news now about the Q1b

Steve, from Carrypad, is a real news hunter. Today he is posting about the latest information he has found of the Samsung Q1b.

5 hours Battery life. Yes, it looks like the VIA C7-M is finally being used to good effect. They are quoting 60% more battery life.
Are you listening Amtek? Are you listening Intel?

Re: More news now about the Q1b

The Quick Guide and the User Manual for the Q1b are on the Samsung site...

    http://www.samsung.com/search/search.asp?charset=utf-8&ht=0&qp=&qs=&qc=&pw=755&ws=0&la=en&qm=0&st=1&nh=10&lk=1&rf=0&rq=0&si=1&ct=None&oct=&oq=%0D%0A&fs=&oqqtex=q1p&bqt=q1p&th=0&ts=0&selradio_temp=&qt=q1b&tabpage=1&radio=1&col=download+ws+wu&select=0

One thing the manual states that I am not crazy about is that the Q1b has a single mono speaker. I hope this is a typo and they did not remove the stereo 2w per speaker spec that the Q1 has. I consider the stereo speaker feature one of the main reasons I would choose the Samsung over the TabletKiosk UMPC.

Samsung's IFA page shows that Q1b will use the same Intel Celeron M processor, like the original Q1. Check the details on my site, or you can find the original page here.

    Miklos.

That must be an error. The British press and the manual state that the Q1b has a VIA C7-M. I think they've just put the Q1 specs up until they make the press release about price and availability.
I've also had word from a good source that the Q1b uses a VIA C7-M

Re: More news now about the Q1b

So will there be two new Samsung UMPCs released 4thQ? The Q1b and the Q1P?

It always is interesting to see the pre-release information develop right before a new tech release.

I have been waiting for the 2nd generation UMPCs to come out before I purchase one and it looks like it should be an exciting fourth quarter.

helmutk, Steve's article at CarryPad stated that Samsung originally announced it as the Q1P, but it has since been re-named to the Q1b.

Re: More news now about the Q1b

I'm not even sure that they announced it as the Q1p. If you can imagine that it was a verbal presentation at IFA, someone probably got P and B mixed up. I could be wrong but I think it was always the Q1b. I guess it doesnt really matter thought. Even it's called the Mickey Mouse UMPC, the specs look very good indeed.

Re: More news now about the Q1b

I was at IFA today, and there was hardly anything but flatscreen tv's and mobile entertainment. There was a Q1 and a Q1B on the Samsung stand displayed, but the people there could hardly answer any questions. If there is a P unit, I'm sure they would have shown it as well.

Yes, either Q1b or Q1P the specs do look great and I will probably be ordering one as soon as it is available. Hopefully the October release is realistic and it is closer to the first of the month rather than the end of the month.

After a quick scan through the manual, I really like the look of this machine.  I think I'll have to wait until this one comes out to make my buying decision.

    Steve,

have you seen the newest blog about Q1b? There is the same - and I also hope: false - information about Q1b's specs, indicating there is a Celeron M in it.

    Hi Mikkos.
I think they got that wrong. Check out my latest journal entry on the Q1b. Winfuture.de got some images proving it was running a VIA processor.

Re: More news now about the Q1b

As more definite specs come out on the Q1b I am getting more dissapointed.

Looks like it now only has a mono speaker and mono microphone input. They dropped the CF slot; I was hoping to use it for temporary additional audio or video storage. HDSPA was added but by the time that is supported where I live we will be on the 5th generation of UMPCs. The ethernet port was also dropped which probably would not affect me but it is nice to have since there is no dock for this unit. Also it does not look like there is any change to the joystick function so there will still be no built in mouse.

So to me the biggest pluses are the 1Ghz Via processor. the increase of battery life, the 1GB of Ram, the 60GB HD, and the 30% brighter screen.

I may end up just going for the Q1 which will most likely drop down in price when the Q1b is released.

Re: More news now about the Q1b

    Helmut,

I haven't seen anything coming out that has made me reconsider the "wisdom" in buying the Q1. the bad news is, nothing is making me think it's time for an upgrade.
