Q1U-XP: TouchKit vs. MS HID drivers

Ok, so I've spent a few days experimenting with both the eGalax TouchKit drivers and with Microsoft's HID drivers for the Q1U running XP Tablet 2005. I do have the unit preloaded with XP from Samsung (apparently I'm a minority). I guess I'm looking for some opinions/experiences/tips/tweaks in regards to how to best use the touchscreen. Admittedly, I'm beginning to wonder if I wouldn't have been better off going with a pure tablet PC as opposed to a UMPC...but, I digress.

    Here are my experiences:

    TouchKit Pros:
    * Calibration is WAY more accurate due to the ability to have a 25-point linearization. Very handy.
    * Faster response--the pointer simply follows the touch faster.

    TouchKit Cons:
    * No visual indication that a right click is being registered. You just tap-and-hope.
    * Right click doesn't work the way one would expect. When trying to tap-and-hold on an item, it registers a regular left click, then a right click. This launches the shortcut or activates the hyperlink before you get the desired context menu. Yes, I know one can tap and slide, then hold to get that menu, but this doesn't work so well for web pages. There's also an option to Click on Release, which is similar to Microsoft's implementation, but then using scrollbar thumbs is impossible. One can only click in a scrollbar--not a deal-breaker, but annoying. I tried MS's "HoldTool" in conjunction with the TouchKit driver, but it does nothing.

    MS HID Pros:
    * Great visual indication of tap-and-hold (the red dots with a cute little mouse)
    * Right click does work the way one would expect, especially having been used to the Pocket PC implementation. Scrollbars and controls respond immediately, while links and shortcuts activate on release rather than touch.

    MS HID Cons:
    * Slower response, although it's not that big of a deal. Window dragging is just a little slower.
    * Very inaccurate. Four-point linearization is not enough. And even then, sometimes it's inaccurate. This behavior persists both with the beta driver released through CTitanic's efforts (thanks!) and with MS's own HID driver (which does install on the Q1U once TouchKit is removed).

I'm intersted in feedback on your experiences. I love the visual feedback with the MS HID driver, but the inaccuracy is really annoying--and really not acceptable. On the other hand, the strange implementation of tap-and-hold with the eGalax TouchKit driver is equally annoying.

Right now, I'm back to TouchKit. But that could change if there's a way to fix the HID inaccuracy. Does anyone know of a way?

It took me long time to get eGalax to release HID Beta Drivers for the  Q1.  HID Drivers should be in all UMPC. Without them  UMPC just do not function properly.

I agree. Have you had issues with calibration? If so, what have you done to solve them?

Re: Q1U-XP: TouchKit vs. MS HID drivers

... so, is there an option for better calibration/tracking in Vista on the Q1U?

I love the animated circle to confirm right click but would like it be be a bit more accurate esp near the screen edges) and quicker - would (hopefully) make inking smoother ;)

Other thing I'd like to see is more smarts to ignore my palm... downside of passive is when it spills over the edge of the display the mouse goes to sniff it ;)

Has this issue been resolved? I too have a Q1U XP and I'm using the MS Drivers. Should I stick with them or download Touchkit? And does someone have the correct link to the Touchkit XP drivers?
    Thanks

No I never had any issues with calibration. Basically I calibrated in the way I said in the txt attached to eGalax beta file from my site.

Re: Q1U-XP: TouchKit vs. MS HID drivers

Has anyone ever found a fix for the touchkit right-click behavior, or talked with eGalax about a fix? I wish you could get the accuracy of touchkit with the default (and sensible) mouse behavior of the windows driver. I find it hard to believe I'm the only one that finds it absurd that they developed a touch screen driver that won't allow you to right click on objects without it left clicking first. It makes many applications completely unusable with the touchscreen.

Better yet, eGalax's website doesn't even work with touchscreens, because the menus aren't links themselves, and require mouse hovering. If you click on them first, the menu disappears. Seems like a rather significant disconnect from their product. :)
