    Re: asus?

Yep, i'd been watching Hugo's video last night and that was what made me think of the question actually.  No gram weight on the manual though, so I thought what better place to ask the question than this forum?

    Thanks for the info!

    Re: asus?

Sounds to me like a 120gm screen.
Personally I prefer a lighter screen because I do more finger work than handwriting with the pen.

    Re: asus?

Hi all, i'm interested in the Asus R2H and I have a few questions.

Is the R2H slow even with the total Ram of 768mb? Do programs take a bit of time to open?

How is the screen? Is it grainy like the Eo v7110 or does it have the contrast covering like the X-brite Vaio screens and are the colors nice?

Is the buttons and the "joypad" comfortable to use? Clicky or easily pressed? Good for gaming?

I'd like to buy one but i'm up in the air about it since it is a lot of money.

    Thanks guys.    Jerry.

    Re: asus?

    Hi Jerry,

I have a R2H model with 512 MB memory, but without webcam and bluetooth.

I think the R2H is quite snappy. allmost all office applications load within 6 to 10 seconds. Only Word and Excel took 20 seconds, but i think that has to do with the virus control, at least that is what i see on the bottom of the window when those applications are loading. Working with the applications is quite snappy to. I am not at all disappointed with the response of the R2H, especially after disabling the Asus multy frame utility.

The screen is not of the 'true brite' type, but i think it is good enough. It would have been extremely nice If it had the same screen as my HX4700 pocket PC with it's high resolution screen and beautiful colors. The screen is comparable with my older low resolution PPC.

Well, i am not a gaming guy, but i think Asus did really a good job concerning the buttons, the joypad and the joystick. They feel solid, click nice and are good positioned. When i am surfing on the internet, it feels like playing on a PSP kind of device.

you are right, it is a lot of money, but on the other hand you get a really nice little tablet pc with which you can do about the same things as on a much larger laptop. There is even a finger print scanner included as there is a GPS unit. And of course the included USB keyboard.

    Regards, Henri

    Re: asus?

A quick note for those of you in Germany or austria.
The R2H started shipping today. This is the full-spec version and there are a number of online retailers showing it as in stock. Price is around 900 Euro. (768MB / 60 GB)

I'll be getting a look at it either tommorrow or Friday and reporting on the journal.

    Regards.
    Steve.

    Re: asus?

Thanks Henri. I have been looking at all the umpc models lately and they all seem to be great devices. The Q1b Via version looked good too but it only has the mono speaker, no ethernet port, and according to Steve(Chippy) no Vista compatibility because of the lack of DirectX9 support.

Your answers were very helpful as the Asus seems to be the overall better buy. I forgot to ask about the stylus if you thought it was comfortable to use and has the right thickness for long writing sessions but oh well. Everthing else seems to be just about right though and I really like the aesthetics of the R2H.

    Thanks again.     Jerry.

    Re: asus?

Jerry the two reasons i switched from an ASUS preorder to the Q1b are a) the cost, and b) the battery.  Now from what we've seen as far as pricing, most convert to between 1200 and 1400 US dollars.  That's a bit high for me.  Also the Q1b is supposed to be sporting a battery life which works for about 5 hours.  That is about double what i've heard the ASUS battery being (about 2)

    Re: asus?

Well, the current price that i have seen for the R2H on pre-order, such as dynamism.com, who normally jack the price up pretty high, is going to be selling the 60 gig with max factory ram for $999.

The only current draw back i see is the wait for shipment right now, and some driver/software issue's that will be ironed out, kinda like anything new on the PC side of things. Oh yea, and WAITING for a US release date.

    Re: asus?

propstm is not online. Last active: 10-11-2006, 7:10 PMHi propstm and Nobodyspecial, I thought the Q1b looked very nice and the price was outstanding for a 4-5 hour device. The concerns though were the lack of a mouse knob and the omitted Lan port. Otherwise it is a nice looking machine.

The R2H price from dynamism is something I am watching. I noticed they listed some of the accessories for it and their respective prices. I'm surprised the standard battery was that costly though but that device is a nice looking piece of technology.

The Vega has the right size for my pocket but Steve(Chippy) from Carrypad mentioned the heat issue which is the real negative for me. If I take a break and watch a long movie on it I don't want to be holding a hot device in my (now) sweaty hand.

They all have their pluses though. Can't wait for some reviews on the full production units.     Jerry.

    Re: asus?

I forgot to say that the extended battery for the Q1/Q1b is about the same price on ebay as the R2H standard battery from the dynamism accessories list. This would make the initial cost of the R2H look like a great deal but if you want the Asus branded extras you will be paying more in the longer run. Maybe the Asus R2H battery will be less when the units actually ship.

The other thing was the screen quality. All the 7" umpc's have nice quality(adequate?) screens but the smaller ones like the Vega and the Dualcor seem to be a little better. Hugo's video unboxing of the Vega indicates this by his "woah" response to first seeing the screen and the Dualcor seems to "look nicer" in the photos from the Umpc get together that Jkontherun staff had a while back. I could be wrong though.

I've seen the Eo V7110 screen in person and it is nice but I did notice a "grainy-ness" to it that I do not notice on my laptop inspite of the smaller size. I've read reviews on it saying that the screen was vivid which is a bit of an exaggeration. The Eo was a great device though on every other count.

Well, that's my two pennies. :)        Jerry.

    Re: asus?

Jerry, hopefully i'll have a Q1b review out sometime next week for ya.  Let me know if there is anything in particular, aside from normal review stuff (graphics, battery life, screen brightness, usability, screen weight), you may be looking to know.

    Re: asus?

I am amazed, getting about 5:45 with two batteries combined(the thin one about 2:30-2:45 and thick one around 3 something), on battery-saving mode (with the help of the button on the right side of the unit) i am getting even more, around 6hours&more until it goes into auto hibernation. All in all, i think it has amazingly exceeded my expectations, i was expecting 4 hours from both.

Hey all. I finally (a long time after a lot of you here) managed to get hands-on with the R2H tonight.

I'm just about to fall asleep for the weekend now. Its been a crazy week.
