That said, how much did it cost to get from the base unit to where you are now with the R2H (for its owners), including the cost of the R2H? What about if you had only upgraded to get to 0.50 Gigs of RAM?

I think the initial cost of ownership plus the upgrade (either one) is higher. So, why did you wait for the R2H?

At this moment I can buy a Samsung Q1 for 1070 euros (expansys.nl) or an Asus R2H for 699  euros (mycom.nl).

Both have 512MB memory and a 40GB harddrive. The Samsung has a longer-lasting battery, bluetooth and stereo built-in speakers and microphone, the R2H has a GPS, AutoRoute and a foldable USB keyboard. (and then there are some other differences)

Based on this I do think that the Asus offers more value-for-money. (I would like a longer-lasting battery though)

    Cheers! Stefan.

    Re: asus?

Lucky you, Stefan. The US prices don't seem to be that far off for just the UMPCs, and when you add in the cost of the additional RAM, the R2H will apparently cost more.

I tihnk in the final analysis that if you want everything in one device, then the R2H is the choice for you. If you prefer using GPS and other things with other devices, it isn't.

The main thing is that you be happy with your purchase, just like Frank is with his eo, and I with my Q1.

Can't you get it to work at all, or does it often reject your fingerprint? Applying the last updated driver is a good suggestion. It works a lot better.

    Cheers! Stefan.

    Re: asus?

    Just one question:

If I buy the r2h at mycom, the waranty would it be european or not? ( if I have some problems I can send it to the Asus italian service or I need to send it to the dutch service?

    Thanks in advance

Asus has a pick-up-and-return warranty, so after the initial 8-day return policy of Mycom, you have to deal with Asus for warranty. (I expect Mycom will help you if there are any problems though)

Best advice I can give is to contact the Italian Asus support site, since you want their support when needed...

    Cheers! Stefan.

    Aviruth,

If you have the same model as we have in Holland, the unit has no Webcam and no Bluetooth.

    Henri

    propstm:
Correct me if im wrong, but in the US the only places that you can get a UMPC is either at Fry's Electronics, or through the Best Buy web site.

I had a thought earlier today.. "Maybe the device is relatively rare because you can only find it in two retailers or else you need to seek out the manufacturers."

The Best Buy in Irving Texas has the Q1 in stock and on display. The sales associates dont know a single thing about it.

    Re: asus?

The Q1 was available from Best Buy and CDW online from date of release in the US. It later became available at Fry's. The only place Best Buy has them in-store is in TX. They started that in July IIRC.

The various Amtek versions have been around from several sources online since release.

It would probably be safe to say they are generally available online, not in store. The same is usually true of laptops and tablets. The manufacturers make too many builds of them for the stores to stock every variation. They generally have the fully-loaded models in-store, and the barely-can-get-out-of-their-own-way models, too.

Add to that the fact that the UMPC manufacturers aren't the ones known for their laptops, like HP, Lenovo, or Dell.

It may be surprising that this is the case, but given that it is the case, it isn't surprising that UMPCs aren't well known. Everyone at work calls my Q1 my "little toy".

If Vista's final RTM turns out to be as good as folks here are raving, then we may see a change in who makes them, what their specs are, and who wants them. Even then, maybe not.

People equate computing power with size. (Not those in the know, of course.) UMPCs just don't look like they're up to any sizable computing task. Of course, most people who worry over that only use a browser and an email client.

    Go figure...

    ;-)

    Re: asus?

Here's a question about the R2H screens.  I was just reading through the R2H manual and didn't see anything on the gram weight of the touchscreen on the R2H.  Does anyone happen to know what it was?

    Thanks.

    Re: asus?

well, i can not tell you anything in terms of 'grams' but i can tell you that the screen is very suitable for writing with the stylus on it.You can rest with your hand on the screen without disturbing the writing proces. What i red about this on the Q1 , the Asus is better on this point. Offcourse this has adown side, the screen is less responsive when using your finger, you should use your nail.

    Re: asus?

    Hey there propstm,

I think if i am not mistaken, from what i heard in a review by hugo ortega; it was mentioned that the grams of the screen is low on the tabletkiosk 7210 and u need very tiny amount of pressure to click stuffs on the screen. On the R2H though, as mentioned below by Roypierce, you mainly use the nail. It's quite ok though, especially with the touch improvement in place.
