    Re: asus?

    bjornkeizers:
The only problem I have with it so far is that the fingerprint reader absolutely refuses to register any of my digits. Then it's too fast, then the image is of bad quality. None of my ten fingers manages to get past three, four succesful scans to register.

    Hi Björn,

I had that problem too. Just register your fingers again ant give it some time to get used to.

If it's due to it's self-learning abilities or mine; I don't know but it goes better all the time.
I had a few times it accepted my print in one try.

At the beginning I had the weird problem I lost certain settings like explorer settings. This seems gone now.
Sometimes I still have small problems though:

    - Sometimes the touch screen driver doesn't get loaded or doesn't work
    - If you are too quick to start entering your fingerprints after startup strange things can happen. The same if you wait too long.
    - The GPS works only with the Autoroute software. Other software will work but you need to run Autoroute to initialize it (tried 5 other programs so far).

    Have fun with your R2H,

    Marcel

    Stefan:

At first I had the same annoyance with the fingerprint scanner. But after a few days, I'm getting the hang of it. I'm getting some first-scan successes right now. My impression is that it works better if you use a little pressure on it. (but it's a good thing that a security device is sensitive isn't it :-)

    ...

    Stefan.

    Stefan,

I had the same issue trying to get two fingerprints properly read, annoying indeed. After I downloaded updated drivers (dated 30/8/06) from the ASUS support side I didn't have any dificulties in reading and recognizing fingerprints anymore. That made a huge difference.

    Roel

Edited: adjusted the date for the drivers from 30/9/06 to 30/8/06. My mistake...

    Hi Roel,

Care to give us the direct link to this driver? I can't find anything relating to the fingerprint reader on their site. What is it called?

Also they put 30 or 31/08/06 after almost everything but some of it is old stuff.

    Thanks,
    Marcel

    Hi Roel,

Thanks for the tip. I should have thought of it myself: getting the newest drivers is (almost) always a good idea.

For other members: the drivers can be found here:http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us (Enter R2H in the left-upper field showing "Input model to search")

    Cheers! Stefan.

    Re: asus?

    Hi,

Great device, the asus R2H. Everything works. Except... i had to disable the power lan savings in the BIOS otherwise my lan adapter wouldnt wake up when you plugged in a network cable.
My colleague doesn't have the problem, same bios / driver version etc. Is there anybody else who recognises this?

    Second question:
Anybody knows now to how many Mb's you can expand the internal memory?
On the box it says 1280 but since the box also tells us the asus device has a webcam.....
( i prefer the foldable keyboard though so i am certainly not complaining about that :-))

    Hi Klokkie,

    1. Haven't had that problem yet. Can you tell me how to get in the BIOS? Do you need a keyboard?

    2. The box is universal to save money and made some time ago. As far as I know it can handle only 768MB total but until someone tries it we don't know 100% sure.

    Re: asus?

    Klokkie, ZhuBaJie,

Regarding the memory if decided to take the change and I've ordered a 1GB S0-Dimm. I'll expect the specific Dimm to be delivered Monday at the earliest, so expect an answer to that early next week (fingers crossed....).

What I've done is I had a look at the specications of memory certified by Asus on their website (support site, FAQ search on R2H), than checked on the Infineon (now Qimonda) vendor site for similar 1GB S0-dimms and decided to go for the 1GB, 128x64, PC2-5300, 5-5-5 (*) one because that one was quite similar as the certified 256/512MB ones on ASUS's site.

Found a company in the Netherlands with that specific article number and its now a wait and see.......

    (*) (Details http://www.qimonda.com/computing-dram/ddr2/so-dimms.html)

    I'll let you guys know.

Thanks for that one, I was just wondering about how to get in the BIOS. Didn't occur to me to use the foldable keyboard.....

How has the battery life of the device been?  I just realized I hadn't heard much on that topic yet :-D

My experience so far is approx. 2 hours, but I have 'played' with it only for a week now. So far I feel some tweaking is needed (turning off unnecessary services etc.) to have it performing better and longer. Got high hopes on adding more memory resulting in less use of the harddisk (swapping) but that's something I can you tell you more about somewhere next week (and if it works, see other post).

    Re: asus?

    Stefan:

Anyone find out how to rotate the screen? I have found a dialogue once, but haven't been able to re-find it. There is a dialogue in the display set-up, but that one says that my screen resolution is too low..

The way I do it is right-mouseclick on the desktop > graphics options > (intel dialog pops up) > display settings and there's drop-downs for the resolution and some checks to select the rotation (o", 90", 270" etc.) That worked for me, though I only tried it once or twice.

I'll also give the new fingerprint drivers a go. Thanks guys.

    Marcel,

    - Sometimes the touch screen driver doesn't get loaded or doesn't work
    - If you are too quick to start entering your fingerprints after startup strange things can happen. The same if you wait too long.

I've encountered the first one as well. It actually happened the first time I booted the device - nearly soiled my pants thinking the touch screen was busted!

I've also had a funny thing happen with the fingerprint scanner. I was holding the device with two hands with my left thumb just above the left mouse button -- just on the scanner. I've never had a device with one, it's a new device, so I didn't think about placing my thumb. After using it a while, an error started popping up in the right hand corner of the screen, with a little fingerprint scanner icon and failure messages such as 'the image was of bad quality' 'swipe slower', etc. etc. The system kept closing and opening messages like that and the only way to stop it was to shut down the entire system. I guess it's keeping the scanner active even though there's no login taking place. Anyone know if there's an option to disable it whenever I'm not expressly trying to log into the system?

    Regarding battery,

My experience is about 1 hour 45 minutes without much tweaking and with average brightness settings, very little WiFi use, etc. For me, it's enough - but I'll probably pick up an extra high-cap battery when available should I need it for longer assignments.

Maybe I ain't looking good enough but I can't find anything related to the fingerprint reader on that site.

Can you tell me where to look and what to look for?

    Thanks,
    Marcel
