    Re: asus?

I think the next release phase will come towards the end of the month.
In Germany i'm expecting an announcement in the next 2 weeks. Maybe the U.S. gets an earlier one.

I have a feeling that the Dutch version of the R2H is some sort of marketing test. Maybe to judge reactions to pricing.

    Regards
    Steve.

I've opened that one. It's access to the S0-Dimm module/slot, occupied by 256MB memory. I'm thinking to tryout swapping it with 512MB or even 1GB memory (as the packaging on one side says total of 1280MB..)

OK, I was wondering where the memory would go.

The panel has a label which talks about WiFi so I thought....

    Re: asus?

    Hi,

I received the R2H yesterday from Mycom. Nice gadget! I was impressed with the accessoiries included: foldable keyboard, USB host to host network adapter, VGA adapter, carrying case, deskstand.

    1. You can use the stylus very well to write on the screen. It recognised my writing without callibration whatsoever.

    2. You can see more, but it's smaller and since 800x480 seems the native resolution, the text is not very good readable. I've used the higher resolution for large windows that couldn't be seen completely in the lower resolution. You can change the resolution with one push on a button and a click with the pen, so that's quite easy.

    3. I have found it. But lost it again.... Somewhere there's a dialogue that gives you the possibility to choose any of the four 90 degrees angles. (including upside-down) Anyone know where it has gone????

    4. Great! Yes, yes, YES! My primary use is photo-viewing. It's a bit more expensive than the Epson P4000 or Jobo Gigi Vu Pro Evolution, but it has a better (bigger) display and does a ton more other things since it's a full Windows PC. If you don't expect desktop-performance, you won't be disappointed.

    Cheers, Stefan.

    Marcel:

I have viamichelin mapsonic and it´s ok.only problem is that it does not have integrated keyboard. so you have to use tablet pc keyboard which is too small for typing while driving.

Remember that viamichelin 4 and newer does not support pc navigation anymore, you have to have mapsonic 3...

Nobody sells this software anymore as far as I can see and I think the maps are outdated by now (?). iGuidance Europe is discontinued too. It seems almost nobody buys it.

I tried to download ViaMichelin thru eMule (want to know if it works on my device first because i tried two packages already that don't work). but all I got until now was a data5.cab file that I can't open.

PaPaGo 5 PC could be an alternative too but the download link on their site doesn't work.

Bummer; I guess I have to learn to live Microsoft Autoroute.

    Re: asus?

    Hi Henri,

    Roypierce:
    1) Maybe my question was not clear enough, but i am not sure i understand your answer on question 3.
Do you mean that it is very good possible to use the stylus to write on the screen?
I hope so, because i want to try handwriting recognition software from PhatWare to translate the written ink into DUTCH text. That is not possible with the Tablet XP 2005 edition.

Yes, it's very good possible to use the stylus to write on the screen.
Is Phatware any good? I downloaded the demo's but didn't try them yet.

    Roypierce:
    2) With the higher resolution setting you can see more, but smaller, on the screen? Or is it a kind of virtual window so you must scroll more.

You can see more but smaller.
The display properties stay at 800x480 and you use the convenient settings button to change the resolution to 800x600 with a push of your finger.

    Roypierce:
    3) Would still appreciate it if you could find the rotation function.

I looked for it but can't find it yet. When I find it I will post it.

    Roypierce:
    4) How is youre over all experience? Does the device meet your expectations, are you satisfied? Would you still buy it?

    Yes, yes and yes.
I hope there will be more, special UMPC, software in the near future though.

    Re: asus?

    Stefan,

Thank you very much for your answers.

Because of what you answered and what Marcel answered, i think i am going to buy one myself. It looks like all the things i want to do with it, can be done.

    A few more questions:

    1)
How do you install programs on the R2H, since it has no build in cd/dvd reader?
Is it possible, with the USB host to host network adapter, to connect the R2H to a notebook and than use the cd/dvd reader of the notebook to install programs?
(offcourse an external unit is possible but i don't (yet) have one)

    2)
What is the quality of the screen. Is it bright and clear? Are you satisfied with it?

    3)
How many days did it take before your unit was delivered?

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,
    Henri

    Re: asus?

    Marcel,

    Thanks again for your answers.

Talking about PhatWare, i was hoping to use their PenOffice software.
    http://www.phatware.com/penoffice/index.html
Because i have no tablet PC i don't know if it really works. Reading their specs, i think it will work.

I do have a PPC and use their Calligrafher product with a Dutch dictionary. I must say that that is working very well. The recognition is about 95%.

Vista promisses a much better support for the stylus, and also a dutch recognition. But i doubt it, if Vista will run properly on the R2H. The R2H has the minimum requirements for Vista. Would be nice if it is possible to upgrade the RAM to 1 GB.

    Kind Regards,

    Henri

    Re: asus?

    You're welcome!

    1) I've installed some apps using a compact-flash card in a card-reader. I _suppose_ the USB network adapter should work as well, but there is a CD with software with it, so you may have to install drivers on both PC's. You could also connect via a TCP/IP network ofcourse and map a drive to the R2H.

    2) It's awesome. It's quite bright and colors seem accurate to me. Only drawback I find is that the vertical viewing angle is not very wide. This makes it hard to view the display with a number of people at the same time. Resolution of 800x480 is very good to me.

Battery life seems 2 hours. I expect Asus to come up with a thicker battery that will last longer. Since the battery covers 2/3 of the back this can easily be done without unbalancing the unit too much.

    Cheers! Stefan.

    Re: asus?

    Just FYI

Contacted MyCom today to check why my R2H doesn't have bluetooth and a webcam, but unfortunately he told me they provided me the correct model (without cam and bluetooth :-().

More interesting, he also there are (or will be) five R2H different models (!). He didn't know any further details about what the differences in those five models are, I'm interested what the different specs of those models are then....

    Re: asus?

I called up the asus - presales for usa.asus.com and asked about the device.  The woman I spoke with said the "standard" device will be $999,  with 60gb HD, and 768mb RAM.

I made a post about it here

    Re: asus?

Here's another new R2H user. I picked up my unit yesterday at the MyCom in Zwolle; the last unit they had in stock.

First impressions: excellent. I knew what to expect from the specifications and past experience with everything from 10kb Casio organisers to laptops, and it performs above expectations. I cleaned out some of the startup stuff and other rubbish (launcher, Norton internet security) and installed some essentials (OpenOffice, Dilbert PDF's, Bejeweled 2) and it's a joy to use. Very well built, good screen, nice features, fast enough for my uses, good pack-ins. A very nice little package for the price. I'm sure the world wide release will see some favourable reviews for this little guy.

My primary use will be document editing. I'm a professional journalist, so it's very handy to have all my notes, contacts, documents, press releases, schedule, etc. in one portable package.

The only problem I have with it so far is that the fingerprint reader absolutely refuses to register any of my digits. Then it's too fast, then the image is of bad quality. None of my ten fingers manages to get past three, four succesful scans to register.

    Re: asus?

    Congrats on the purchase!

Now if ASUS would wise up and release the device to the rest of the world!

    Re: asus?

At first I had the same annoyance with the fingerprint scanner. But after a few days, I'm getting the hang of it. I'm getting some first-scan successes right now. My impression is that it works better if you use a little pressure on it. (but it's a good thing that a security device is sensitive isn't it :-)

Anyone find out how to rotate the screen? I have found a dialogue once, but haven't been able to re-find it. There is a dialogue in the display set-up, but that one says that my screen resolution is too low..

    Stefan.
