    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I finally got around to upgrading my Q1u to 2G RAM last night.  It definitely improved performance as many others have reported.   Unfortunately, my rear camera seems to have stopped working.  Also, if I turn on the front camera and try to switch to the rear camera, the camera software freezes.  I guess I must have screwed up a connection in the dismantling process.

Did you find a solution for the rear camera problem?

    Thanks

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I would like to know too, my rear camera does not work either after the upgrade to 2Gb. I am starting to think that somehow there is a connector on the camera that gets loose when taking the case apart, because wiped the HD and did a clean install of Vista, and still the same problem...

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I've had my Q1U apart several times (replacing the hard drive, upgrading the RAM, etc.) and there is a connector for the rear camera that attaches on the front (screen) side of the case/motherboard near the very top.  It's a little tricky to get connected, but with a small screwdriver and some patience, you should be okay (if the camera cable is in fact disconnected).

The only pictures I have were taken with my cell phone (since I did this at work one slow day), so they're not very good.  In the linked picture below, you'll see a ribbon connector circled (poorly) in red.  This connector is for the rear camera, and it will need to be reattached if it's loose.

    Picture

You'll see a small corresponding socket that is on the front side of the case (or the motherboard, I'm not sure which and my system's not apart at the moment to verify) that looks very similar to the SIM slot on the motherboard.  Regardless, it should be pretty obvious where the ribbon should be connected.  Remember, the picture above shows the front side of the motherboard (the side facing the screen), so it'll be a bit of a struggle to reattach it, but I had to do it once while the board was attached to the case.  Just use a small, flat head screw driver, and patiently seat the ribbon connector in it's socket.  Hope this was helpful. . .

No I have not.  I will take a look at the connector as suggested in the post above. Hopefully, I'll have time this coming weekend to do that.

    Thanks for the pic wpennhokie!

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

This is a strange phenomena. I did the 2GB upgrade a few months ago, and have not had any problems with my camera. I followed Hugo's instructions to the letter. I honestly don't remember any connector for the rear camera on my Q1U, but I could be mistaken.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

There isn't one. There is simply a camera fix mounted on the top board and it just corresponds to a plastic clear window in the back of the case.

The rear of the case isn't connected to anything by cable.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Thanks for that positive, useful post, Noger.  Since I'm being called a liar, and I had a few minutes here at work (with a better digital camera), here's the retort for those of you looking for actual help.

(Disclaimer:  please ignore the sarcasm if you're looking for help.  It's been a long day at work.)

    Here's the first picture:

    Rear Camera 1

This the rear view of the system.  You'll notice a ribbon connector (oh my god!) running from the back of the board around to the front.  I even circled it for the slower among us.  You'll note the battery connectors on the right for reference.

    Next pic:

    Rear Camera 2

This a view from the top.  Note the headphone jack and top USB port.  You'll see something that looks suspiciously like a ribbon cable (hmmm. . .) that is disconnected from a PCB (this is actually part of the LCD assembly).

    Last pic:

    Rear Camera 3

And, for the coup de grace, you'll see there's a socket on the PCB that would appear to take the ribbon cable that (oddly enough) runs from the rear camera to the front.  I made sure this was reseated before closing the case up again.  When the system came up, the rear camera was working fine.

I (again) hope this helps those of you having the rear camera problem.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

Ah, so here is the misunderstanding....

The question wasn't about the front case, it was the back. If you removed the FRONT of the Q1U when doing a 2Gb upgrade, then you are doing it wrong :)  Or doing something more complicated.

To do the 2Gb upgrade, you remove the back of the case. There is no ribbon connector to the back of the case (which is what I was pointing out). The case just comes away (well, with some effort).

If all you have done is remove the back of the case, then I was simply suggesting that it may be unlikely that the connector was dislodged as it isnt connected to the back. They all seem quite tight connections.

Before you start ripping the thing to bits (like I did, and have a GBP350 bill and still no Q1U for my efforts) it might be worth looking at other avenues.

Sorry for trying to help !

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

The problem is that when you remove the BACK case, it is quite hard to get it off around the headphone jack, and I think that is when people tend to disconnect the cable. At least, that's what happened to me - because of all the moving around, it got disconnected.

    Re: Q1 Ultra 2GB Upgrade

I took the back off my Q1u this past weekend.  Sure enough, it appears that the cable in question is dislodged from its connector.    However, I'm afraid I don't have the patience or motor skills to reconnect it without a major tear-down.  I'll just get by without the camera for now.
