    Hi Pong,

Do you find any support for HSDPA/UTMS? I learned that Q1b got this fantastic feature but I may need to depend on you to help to verify.

    regards,

    Andy

I'm sorry, Andy. I don't know what HSDPA/UTMS is. Can you tell me how can I find that in my Q1B. I will find out for you.

So it's the same battery as in the (original) Q1; any battery life extension comes from lower power use.  Does this mean that the speed stepping is working properly now?

Re: More news now about the Q1b

Thanks for the battery feedback Pong.

Anton. The Speed-steppinog was always working. It was the sleep states that were'nt working properly.

The main reason for the battery life improvement is probably the screen. In all UMPCs, the screen and backlighting is taking a huge chunck of power. I suspect they have dropped a fairly new LED-backlit LCD in along with Wifi improvements (some UMPC devices use old USB-based Wifi modules that take up to 3W. Thats way way too much. They've probably reduce all the background power drain too by reducing component count (the combined north/southbridge - VX700 will have helped a lot.)

If we take 4 hours as the avergae useage from the battery its 29 (Watt/hr) / 4 = 7.25W average drain. Thats really amazing. My i7210 takes 12W average.

Think about it - 7.25W. Thats seriously leading edge stuff.

    Steve.

I got mine today. Unfortunately, it seems to be defective. :(

The screen has lots of horizontal lines which flickering constantly. AVS doesn't work. It displays starting message then hangs. The hard drive also seems to have problem. I've heard pretty big beep sound from the hard drive and don't believe it's normal. I'm contacting Newegg now asking for a replacement. Their return policy for computer is pretty strict and knowing that they don't have any Q1b currently in stock, I might have to go for Samsung warranty service. But I'm not happy if I need to have my brand new UMPC replaced by repaired or refurbished one. Tough luck.

    Hi Pong,

If you can find a SIM card slot at the back or left/right sides of Q1b then it may possibly get the HSDPA (up to 14M connection speed in future) support.

    best regards,

    Andy

Yep, so i'd placed my preorder for my Q1b at CDW on the 10th.  I was notified this morning that they were backordered (even though the website said they'd ship in 9-11 days)

After a chat with customer support I found out their shipments have been slow, and my new estimated ship date is the 30th.

    Again I wait...

Re: More news now about the Q1b

I'm also a little bummed by the lack of stereo speakers on the Q1b. I wonder if part of the plan to conserve the battery (along w/the new chip/chipset) was to prevent people from playing tunes through the speakers or something. I noticed some other UMPCs only have one speaker as well. Otherwise, it seems like a cheap way to upgrade the machine to sell it at a lower cost. If someone could tell me that they sounded bad anyway (like the ones in my LCD monitor) then I wouldn't care, but apparently they sounded pretty good on the Q1 considering their size.

Either way, I'd still get the extended life battery if it fits the new unit. Standard batteries seldom seem to provide enough juice. Any way you could order it with the extended battery as an upgrade instead of the standard one and save a few bucks? :) I know -- probably not.

I suppose I can understand removing the Ethernet port when the unit already has wireless. But why remove the CF slot? Guess I could use an SD card via a USB thumb card-reader (Office Depot has them for about $10). Newbie question: but does USB require more power?

I guess it was a space-saving excersise for the cellular radio.  Has anyone confirmed that it's actually in the American market versions?

No Sim card slot or any slot like that was found on my Q1b, Andy.

I agree with you Ryan in terms of the the quality of sound from the speaker. It's not bad. One more thing, when I played music on my Q1, the capacity of the battery will be decreased about 50% immediately I think.

Man, sorry to hear this bad news. I think they will replace this one with another brand new one rather than fixing it, but it might take time to get it.
